You know the rules. You've broken most of them. Here they are anyway — no judgment, just recognition.
Blue Fawn Candle Co. · Glow Notes
There are rules. Good rules. Rules based on real science about wax and wicks and burn quality. Rules that, if followed, would give you a perfect burn every single time. Rules that most candle people know and break on a regular basis with full awareness and zero regret.
Here they are. With the reality of how they actually go.
✦
1
The rule:
Trim the wick to a quarter inch before every burn.
You do this approximately 40% of the time. The other 60% you light it directly and tell yourself the flame looks fine. It does not always look fine. You know this. You accept it.
2
The rule:
Don't burn for more than four hours at a time.
You lit it at 2pm. It is now 9pm. You just noticed. The wick has mushroomed. The wax pool is enormous. You had one job.
3
The rule:
Let it cool completely before putting the lid back on.
You gave it five minutes. Maybe seven. That's basically the same as completely. The lid went on. The wax was still warm. You've made peace with this.
4
The rule:
Keep candles away from drafts and moving air.
The window is open. The fan is on. The candle is flickering like it's auditioning for a horror film and the wax is pooling unevenly on one side. You knew this would happen. The breeze was worth it.
5
The rule:
Always burn in a well-ventilated space.
The bathroom would like to have a word. Your self-care routine has very strong feelings about this rule and those feelings are that the rule does not apply in the bathroom.
6
The rule:
Store candles away from direct sunlight.
The windowsill display is beautiful. It catches the light perfectly. The wax has faded slightly on one side. The aesthetic trade-off was worth it and you're not reconsidering.
"You lit it at 2pm. It is now 9pm. You just noticed. You had one job."
7
The rule:
Never leave a burning candle unattended.
You went to make a snack. Then you checked your phone. Then you got invested in something on TV. The candle was fine. It is almost always fine. You have still technically broken this rule every time.
8
The rule:
Stop burning when half an inch of wax remains.
Absolutely not. You paid for this candle. You are going to burn every last molecule of wax. The jar is getting warm and the scent has changed slightly and you are still going. This is a matter of principle.
9
The rule:
Use a candle snuffer — never blow out the flame.
You do not own a candle snuffer. You have blown out every candle you have ever owned. Sometimes you use the lid. Sometimes you wave your hand at it. The candle survived. So did you.
10
The rule:
Buy candles one at a time so you use them before they expire.
Ha. There are currently between two and seven candles in your home at various stages of use. One of them is from last year. One of them is still in the bag. This is not a problem. This is a collection.
✦
The thing is — most of these rules exist for good reasons. Trimming the wick actually does give you a cleaner burn. Not burning past four hours actually does preserve the scent throw. These are not arbitrary rules invented to make candle ownership harder.
But candles are also just candles. You burn them because they make your space feel good. The goal was never a perfect burn — the goal was a room that smells incredible on a Tuesday. Most of the time that happens anyway, rules or no rules.
Follow the ones that matter to you. Break the ones that don't. Light the candle either way.
How many did you recognize?
If it was more than five you're a candle person. If it was all ten you're one of us and you know it. Either way your space deserves a good scent.
